Due to the Law on the Protection of Sovereignty, the European Union started legal proceedings against Hungary

Due to the Law on "Protection of Sovereignty", the European Union started legal proceedings against Hungary.

"Evronius" writes that the law approved by the Hungarian Parliament in December last year gives the state the right to initiate investigations against individuals and organizations suspected of undermining the country's sovereignty. Conviction under the said law provides up to three years of imprisonment.

The law will be implemented by a new government office that will collect information on groups of individuals who receive foreign funding and are believed to be influencing public debate. Hungarian security services are obliged to assist the office.

According to Euronius, the provisions of the draft law, especially its vaguely worded mandate and lack of judicial oversight, have caused serious concern among civil society and the media, who fear that they will be unfairly targeted for rejecting the political dogmas of the country's Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán. The European Commission echoed those views, saying on Wednesday that the law "violates" a wide range of fundamental values, such as the principle of democracy, the right to privacy, the protection of personal data, freedom of expression and association and the right to a fair trial.

Hungary has two months to respond to the European Commission's claims.
